EBCDA Inclement Weather
Adopted: June 15, 1998
Amended: November 28, 2011
The Board of Education recognizes that there are times when natural weather phenomena or artificially induced environmental hazards may result in atmospheric conditions that threaten the safety of children while they are in attendance at school. In the event of such a circumstance the Board expects the principal exercise judgment as whether students should be allowed outside of the building during the school day.
The following guidelines are designed to assist the principal with the decision:
- When the combined temperature and wind chill register below -20 degrees Celsius the principal shall ensure that individual students have access to shelter within the school building during the school day. When the combined temperature registers below -22 degrees (+or- 2 degrees) the principal shall decide whether recess breaks and the lunch hour will be held in-doors. When the combined temperature registers below -24 degrees students shall not be required to go outside during class breaks.
- When the principal receives information from a reputable authority that outdoor environmental conditions may pose a risk to the health of a student(s), the principal shall ensure that the student(s) has the opportunity to remain indoors.
