HIBI Use Of Electronic Devices In Schools

Background

The District encourages the appropriate use of mobile electronic devices to support learning and communication. The use of mobile devices should be subject to the principles of digital citizenship, and to the Acceptable Use of Information & Communications Technology policies.

Policy

The Board believes that the use of electronic devices in school must be focused on enhancing educational process and content.

Guidelines

  1. Schools may develop an electronics policy to manage use of non-educational electronic devices in the school.

Procedures

  1. Schools must consult with the School Advisory Council during the policy development.
  2. Actions and consequences must be included in the school discipline plan, student handbooks and be communicated to students and parents/guardians.
  3. Exemptions to the school’s electronic device policy must be for educational purposes only and must have pre-approval by the principal or designate.

Definition: Electronic devices include but are not limited to: music players, cell phones, cameras, laptops and other mobile devices.
School administrators may add devices to this list as technology evolves.
