HK Student Evaluation, Assessment and Reporting - Exhibit 1

Mandatory Assessments

1.   Provincial Achievement Tests (PAT)

Purpose: For schools to compare their results with district and provincial results. Optional for teachers to use results on PAT for part of a student’s mark. Major purpose is to compare groups of students not individual students.

Analysis of Results: Schools are encouraged to review results with staff and set targets for improvement.

Reporting of Results: Schools share results with the parents in their school community. District results are presented to the school board.

2.   Diploma Examinations

Purpose: Students receive individual results. Diploma examinations provide a common standard across the province in core subjects. Acceptance criteria for post-secondary institutions is based on this common standard.

Optional Assessments

1.   Alberta Assessment Consortium

Purpose: This is a consortium of school districts in Alberta that are working co-operatively with Alberta Education to develop assessment materials that can be made available to teachers in Alberta. Materials are continually being developed and made available. As we receive materials we are forwarding to the schools.

2.   Alberta Education Diagnostic Materials

Purpose: Alberta Education has developed diagnostic materials in mathematics and reading at the elementary level.

3.   Curriculum Assessment Materials Project (CAMP)

Purpose: The Classroom Assessment Materials are summative assessment packages. They are designed to be used by classroom teachers to assess students’ achievement of the learning outcomes specified in the Program of Studies relative to clearly stated standards.
