Helping Hands

For our students in Grades 3-8 experiencing difficulties in reading and spelling we have the Helping Hands program. In September, every student in the school is given screening tests for reading and spelling. Those below grade level are given further tests and some are placed in the Helping Hands program. They receive 30 minutes of individual assistance every day all year. They work on various reading and spelling skills. For at least ten minutes of each period they read a carefully chosen book that is at their reading level. As part of the Accelerated Reading program they take a computer test on the book after they have completed reading it, and are awarded points. Students and teachers love the time they spend together and great gains in reading and spelling have occurred.
