Junior Skills
The Junior
Skills Program is a Special Needs classroom designed for students between the
ages of 8 and 11 and who have completed the Grade 3 program. The child
must have a full scale IQ score in the average range (90 - 110) and have a
learning disability. The child may have behavioural issues associated with the
learning disability. However, these issues should not be the primary reason for
requesting entrance into the program.
Students in the
Junior Skills Program work toward completion of an individualized program plan
which focuses on maintaining and developing reading, writing (including
spelling), and mathematics skills. Since a heavy emphasis is placed on these
subject areas, other courses such as Science, Social Studies, Health and Family
Life are given less attention. Students attend regular Music class and are
integrated into a regular, age appropriate, Physical Education class. All
students have the opportunity to be integrated into a regular classroom at their
grade level should their progress indicate a high possibility of achieving
satisfactory achievement levels.
A student's
individualized program plan may also include goals which focus on the
development of organizing strategies and time management skills. In addition the
enhancement of the student's interpersonal skills may also receive attention.
