Brazil
has the most Catholic people in any country in the world. However, some people
follow other religions.
Many amazing Catholic churches were built in the past 5 centuries. The most famous ones are in a Baroque style. Many of them are very ornate (fancy), with carvings, statues, paint made of gold, and paintings.
There is another important religion called Candomble. It is the religion practiced by people who came from Africa as slaves. They were not allowed to follow their religion. So they changed the names of their African gods to the names of Catholic saints. This way they were able to keep on worshipping their own gods.
Candomble, means "dance for the gods". They believe each person has an orixa (god) which protects them. The women of this religion usually dress in white, in the similar to the traditional clothing worn by their African ancestors. Ceremonies often include a special dancing, candles, and food.
