These
are instruments! They are made from brightly painted wood, gourds and unpainted
palm fronds.
They are played during ceremonies in the
Candomble religion. This was a religion followed by the Nago, Yoruba, and Jeje
people of the Africa. They were the tribes who were sold in Brazil to work on
sugar plantations. Some Afro-Brazilians still follow the music and religion of
their ancestors.
There are actually many types of music special to
Brazil. "Samba" is the most famous music, and is played especially
during Carnival. It is based on African drum rhythms. Bossa Nova and
Tropicalismo, are also special Brazilian music.
