His
ancestors probably came from Portugal. Many people in Brazil have Portuguese
ancestors. Brazil's national language is Portuguese.
The Portuguese were probably the first Europeans to visit Brazil. When they arrived 500 years ago, there were between 2 and 5 million Indians (native people, indigenous people) living in Brazil. Now there are only 200,000.
Today in Brazil there are also people from Japan, the Ukraine, Italy, and other countries. Many people (3 1/2 million) were stolen from Africa and sold as slaves in Brazil from 1550 to 1850. Their descendents still live in Brazil, especially in the state of Bahia.
There is a real mix of skin colours and cultures in Brazil.
