This is the lodge where we stayed. One is a sleeping lodge, with hammocks. One is an eating lodge.

They have no walls because it is never cold in the Amazon. It rains every day for at least 2 hours, even in the dryer season. But the rain comes straight down, without a wind. So people don't need walls at all. The rain is so regular (2-4 p.m.) that people even make appointments by it. "I'll meet you right after the afternoon rain," they might say.

The roofs are made from palm fronds. The poles are made of local trees. The canoe is how Josef, his family and neighbours usually travel. The jungle is very thick, but there are a few footpaths connecting the houses along the river.
