It is on stilts because it is actually built over part of the river. Even houses built on the land beside the river are often on stilts. 

In the Amazon area, there are two seasons, the dry season and the rainy season. In the rainy season, the Amazon River floods over its banks. Many of the trees have water coming half way up their trunks, for several months of each year. We canoed in between the tree trunks! 

These people's houses have no roads coming to them, and they don't own cars. Can you see their canoe?
