Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is a huge, exciting city. Rio de Janeiro means "January River", because it was “discovered” in January 1502 by a Portuguese explorer. (Of course it had already been discovered by the indigenous people who had always lived there!) It became the second capital city of Brazil in 1763. Rio has wonderful sides, and difficult sides.

These are my friends, Anna and Marcos. Where are they?

This is a famous statue of Christ. What is inside his feet?

This is a favela. What is a favela?

These dolls are dressed up in Carnival outfits. What is Carnival?
