Economy of Brazil Continued

Agriculture

There is a large agricultural industry in Brazil.  Brazil grows crops such as coffee, soybeans, wheat, rice, corn, sugarcane, cocoa, citrus fruits and beef.  If something were to happen, Brazil would be able to feed the whole world with all the food it grows.  The unfortunate fact is that, event though they have this much food available; many of the people in Brazil are starving.  As of right now, most of the arable land in Brazil is not used for growing food.  It is used for growing cotton and other non-food agricultural products.  Some peasants use share cropping to make a living.  This is when they take care of the crops and then have to give a share of it to the people who own the land.  Sadly, the bosses usually take more than their fair share of the crops, so the peasants are still struggling to make a living.  Slash-and-burn farming is a very common method in Brazil.  It is a terrible waste, though, because most of the trees that are burnt could be harvested and sold for a profit.

 Trade and Industrialization

Brazil has several industries.  Peasants were very involved in the fishing industry until a few years ago.  They have been banned from fishing on beaches and in public areas because it makes the country “look bad.”  Also, the large fishing boats can carry more and are more efficient so they can sell the fish cheaper and they get all the trade for it.  Manufacturing employs a large portion of Brazilians.  It is very big in the Southeast.  They manufacture food, clothing vehicles and other products.  The Southeast supplies the largest portion of the income to Brazil because it is so advanced in its industries.  There was a big boom from the 1950s to the 1980s in the Southeast.  Afterwards, there was a big recession that hurt the economy a lot.  Brazil exports food, clothing and other products. Manufacturing is the largest part of the industries in Brazil, but a big part of their income comes from tourism and agriculture too.  Brazil is relying heavily on its industries to help pay off its debts.  However, only around 30% of their profits from trade go to paying off the debt.  This will have to change if they ever plan to get rid of it.

 Future Economy

Brazil’s resources have the potential to make the country a world power someday.  All they need is some good organization to get them there.  If they put their money into paying off the debt and educating their people, they will see results sooner.  They need to learn to be more efficient with their budget and in paying off their debt.  This may require sacrifices, but it is worth it in the end.  With hard work, they could be leading the world in trade and industry.  If they can accomplish this, they will become a rich country.

 Student Activities

1. Make a plan to help Brazil get rid of their national debt and become a world leader.  Explain your plan in detail.

2 . Research the economic boom of the Southeast and its recession.  What would you have done to prevent the aftershock of the boom?
