These old pieces of furniture are made out of wood because that is what is nearby. Sometimes culture is based on where people came from. Sometimes it is based on whatever is nearby. People make clothing, furniture, houses, instruments, entertainment - everything - from whatever grows or is found nearby.

Brazil has many different kinds of trees. Some special trees include Brazil wood, iron wood, Bahia jacaranda, and cedar. Many trees are hardwood, which means they are good for building furniture and buildings. Unfortunately, it also means forests can be cut down too much. This is called deforestation.

The style of this furniture is like the old Portuguese furniture. This old building had a stone floor. I loved the small stool chair in the front. I wanted to buy it and bring it home. It was too heavy, and wouldn't fit in my backpack though. So I brought home this picture instead.
