Regions of Brazil

Activity One: Region Research Project

Brazil is divided into five regions based on the physical geography. Topography, climate, soil, vegetation, and land use are five of the features used to define each region. Because each region varies from one to the next, the physical features can be more easily understood if studied one region at a time.

  1. Use the supplied black line master of the Regions of Brazil. Cut out each region. Enlarge and trace onto card stock as a template.

  2. Divide the class into groups of four or five students. Place the names of Brazil's five regions on pieces of paper and put them in a bag. Allow student’s within each group to "choose" the region which they will study.

  3. Students will use the supplied templates to trace out each region onto coloured construction paper and then reassemble regions into a map of Brazil. The reassembled map must be glued onto poster paper. On the reassembled map of Brazil students must draw and label the major rivers and label the major cities.

  4. Each student in the group must complete research on their selected region. All information must be recorded on an data retrieval chart.

  5. Using the data retrieval chart completed above, each student is responsible for completing a report on their region. Research for each region will include:

  • the relative location,

  • the major topographical features,

  • the climate,

  • the soil,

  • the natural vegetation, and

  • land use.

  1. Along the edge of the poster the research completed on each major region will be attached. The poster must be titled "The Five Major Regions of Brazil."

Activity Two: Presentations of the Regions with in Groups

Through individual presentations, research reports about each region will be shared with the rest of the group. Group members will then complete data retrieval charts for each region. As well each student must label and colour a region map. Students must include names of regions, major cites and major rivers.

Guidelines

  1. Each presentations should not exceed 5 minutes in length. The total time for sharing should not exceed 30 minutes. An addition 5 minutes will be allowed to complete the Regions Map.

  2. Each presentation must include information on the six physical features covered during the research portion of this activity.

Activity Three: Extension

Following each presentation, allow time for the class to thoroughly discuss "similarities" and "differences" among Brazil's regions.

Introduce students to physical regions on earth (grasslands, deserts, rain forests, mountains, polar regions). Assign groups of students to different regions. Have students list items that they would need to adapt to the environment when visiting their assigned regions. (Items might include food, clothing, insect repellent, ice ax, etc.) How many of the items do they have to buy? What kinds of items do people who live in rain forest regions have in common with people who live in mountainous regions? What items are unique to one region? What items are manufactured in their region? What items are imported? What items are absolutely essential?

Activity Four: Post Card

Having researched a region individually and shared information as a group, each students should have enough background knowledge to prepare a series of postcards on the regions of Brazil.

  1. Students must imagine that they are traveling through Brazil. They should design and write a post card for someone they know, telling about the things they have seen.

  2. Each post card must containing specific information about each region and providing information about their travel experiences.

  3. Include at least the following information on each post card:

  • Names of the cities and rivers in the region.

  • Describe the landscape and climate.

  • Describe the clothes you needed.

  • Describe the activities you engage in.

  • Describe the difficulties you encountered as a traveler.

  • Describe a particular sight that you thought was fascinating.

  1. Have students use the information and pictures in available textbooks and reference books to help with this assignment.
